rAnDoM word / image association

Random Association is an idea generation method which allows students to systematically generate new ideas through a fixed formula. The whole premise of Random Association is to use a Random Word to provoke a reaction from the brain.

  • use it to stimulate open and divergent thinking and seek creative new ideas.
  • Use it to re-ignite creative thinking when you are running out of ideas.
  • Use it to get people out of a rut when their thinking is still rather conventional.

HOW to use it

1. Find a random word

Find a random word that will be used as a stimulus for new ideas.
Example:
  • Look around you. What can you see? Can you see any words? What about things? What else is happening?
  • Open a book at a random page. Run your finger around the page and stop at a random point. Look for a suitable word near your finger.
  • Ask the people you are with to give you a random word.

2. Find associations

Think about other things about which the word reminds you. Follow associations to see where they go. Think openly: associations can be vague and tenuous.

3. Use the associations to create new ideas

Now create new ideas by linking any of the associations with your problem. Again, the linkage can be as vague as you like: what you want is ideas!
Write the ideas either next to their associations from step 2 or on a separate page.
If other people give ideas that trigger further ideas from you, then you can go off down that route to see where it goes.
As a variant, you can do stages 2 and 3 together, finding an association and an immediate idea from this.

TASK
This week, we required to create an scary image or an object based on the concept " KITTEN".
The image that created must be instill fear for people.
Below is my sketches and my final work.

My sketches about the concept of "KITTEN"

FINAL WORK.........

This is my final work by using the concept kitten to create an scary object. As you can see the image above shows a man wearing the trap. The idea that I create this trap is from the claw of the kitten. There are a key lock on the bottom of the machine so the victim cant open it without the key. When this trap machine start up, the front and the back side will close together and all the sharp claw pierce through the head. Lastly, the victim will died.
This is a very cruel trap machine and I believe that it can be instill fear among people.

We had given a task which is choose 3 pair number between 00-99.

My result:
74  DOG   MOUNTAIN
10  FLOWER   HEAD
07  FLY   TREE

Create a sentence  based on each words.
A dog stand at the mountain.
She place a flower on her head.

A fly fly away from a tree.

Create a new image based on the combination of two word.

TASK 2
For this exercise, we all need to combine 2 animals to let people feel that it cannot be survive.

Giraffe & butterfly
The neck of giraffe is too long when combine with body of butterfly. So I think this animal cannot be survive.

TASK 3
In this exercise,we need to write a poem based on each word.

Love is spicy and hot just like red chilli
The more you eat, the more you feel.

Life like a cup of coffee
It can be sweet or bitter
depends on how you manage it

Time as clock, clock as time

juxtaPOSITION.......

Juxtaposition means placing things side-by-side. In art this usually is done with the intention of bringing out a specific quality or creating an effect, particularly when two contrasting or opposing elements are used. The viewer's attention is drawn to the similarities or differences between the elements. By juxtaposing two objects or words next to each other, human brain will automatically associate or transfer meaning. Usually 'turning' something familiar to something less familar or vice-versa."

There are two types of juxtaposition, literary and random juxtaposition.
In literature and film, juxtaposition is the arrangement of two opposing ideas, characters, objects, etc. side-by-side or in similar narratives for effect.

Random juxtaposition refers to the stimulation of creativity in design or other creative pursuits by arranging objects with the purpose to compare or contrast.

Here are some example for " juxtaposition"

The grass in this Islamic cemetery makes fodder for sheep, a juxtaposition expressing the cyclical nature of life and death.

The juxtaposition expressing photo of man and women.

JUXTAPOSITION: anology
I had learned about the anology, metaphor and simile in class.
Below is the explanation by using mind map form.

MIND mapping.........

A mind map is a diagram used to represent words, ideas, tasks, or other items linked to and arranged around a central key word or idea.Mind maps are used to generate, visualize, structure, and classify ideas, and as an aid to studying and organizing information, solving problems, making decisions, and writing. It is a very popular technique with applications across many fields, a useful technique that improves the way we take notes, and increases our creative problem solving. Through the mind map we can transform our information by using image or some key word. However, mind map is effective in taking note and presentation as well.

There are some example of mind map:

Logical Mind Map
The Logical Mind Map is directly connected to stereotypes. Every word or image that inside the mind map are related to the subject of the mind map. Basically, logical mind map is the common mind map that always using by people.

Associated Mind Map
We are able to generate random words and also show the links between words that seemingly have no connection. By the way, we can think out the box by using the associated mind map. It can be come out with some different or crazy idea.

associated mind map

This week, Mr Radzi had introduce to us about  the mind map. By the way, we know that the function and advantages of the mind map. Just with the simple key word as well as the interesting image, people can get information from the mind map. They will not felt boring when listen the presentation by using mind map because a picture can tell thousand words. We can elaborate anythings that related with the topic regarding the image and make our presentation more attractive. We can simply choose which point to start our presentation and do not need to follow point by point.
During the lesson, we had given a task which is draw a mind map about your partner and draw his  face base on the data inside the mind map.

MIND MAP from Danny

p/s :Thanks for Danny because did not 'destroy' my face  =)

Another task that we doing in class - Based on the data in associated mind map ,we have to  draw the mortar and pestle relevant the 3 words that we choose.
Below are my works.

Marri3d...

My 1st sketching for the mortar and pestle is married. The man on the left hand side who wearing the mortar is the bridegroom and the girl on the right hand side who wearing pestle is the bride. To related with the word "MARRIED", the mortar and pestle are represent the sign of love

Mc DoNalds...

My 2nd sketching for the mortar and pestle is McDonalds. My idea is the mortar represent a bowl to fill the chicken and the use pestle to soften the chicken before eating. It also can use as spoon or fork. There are a McDonalds logo paste on the outside of mortar.

TeacHer...

My 2nd sketching for the mortar and pestle is teacher. For this idea, mortar and pestle is a identiti of teacher. Every teacher need to wear a 'Tie' (pestle) and hold an 'Utensil' (mortar). The function of the pestle is to let student know the identiti of teacher. The mortar is to let teacher to put the chalk and duster.

Novelty - Creativity - Innovation - Invention

This week, our lesson is about the novelty, creativity, innovation and invention. WHAT is the meaning of those 4 words ? For me, I'm not really understand before I attend the class but now I had start to know the defination of each words. In addition, I also had do some searching at the internet to find the meaning of those words.

NOVELTY
The quality of being new or the unique and unusual about the product.
Below is a video that show the novelty of the product.

CREATIVITY
The generation of new idea or create a new way to doing things. Nowadays there are plenty works of creativity that had been created. But how many people know what is the different between " Creativity" and "creativity" ? Answer is C, the small c and the Capital C.We can see small c at anywhere such as child's art work.Capital C means the products that can influene people or change their mind. For example, the bulb had change our life and become very important to us.Anyone can create the small c but not everyone can get the capital C. So, which c you want to acheive ?
Make your own choice.....

INNOVATION
A new way which are improve somethings and made it useful. First of all is find out the problem of the product and come out with the solution. To be called as an innovation, an idea must be replicable at an economical and must satisfy need.

INVENTION
Often extend the boundaries of the human knowledge. It can be a pre-existing product. Invention can be perceived as a transformation of creative thoughts in to tangible ideas.
This is a video that show the invention of  a new product.

For this week, we are given a task which is to describe the novelty, creativity, innovation and invention of Bill Gates.

build gates  Bill Gates

Most of us can recognise this people. No doubt, he is Bill Gates, the chairman of the Microsoft. He is one of the most influential people in the world. He also is cofounder of the most recognized brands in the computer industry with nearly every desktop computer using at least one software program from Microsoft.

HIS-TORY
Gates was born and grew up in Seattle, Washington USA. His father, William H. Gates II was a Seattle attorney and his mother, Mary Maxwell Gates was a school teacher and chairperson of the United Way charity. Gates and his two sisters had a comfortable upbringing, with Gates being able to attend the exclusive secondary "Lakeside School".

Bill Gates started studying at Harvard University in 1973 where he spent time with Paul Allen. Gates and Allen worked on a version of the programming language BASIC, that was the basis for the MITS Altair (the first microcomputer available). He did not go on to graduate from Harvard University as he left in his junior year to start what was to become the largest computer software company in the world; Microsoft Corporation.

Bill Gates and the Microsoft Corporation
"To enable people and businesses throughout the world to realize their full potential." Microsoft Mission Statement
After dropping out of Harvard Bill Gates and his partner Paul Allen set about revolutionizing the computer industry. Gates believed there should be a computer on every office desk and in every home.

In 1975 the company Micro-soft was formed, which was an abbreviation of microcomputer software. It soon became simply "Microsoft"® and went on to completely change the way people use computers.

Microsoft helped to make the computer easier to use with its developed and purchased software, and made it a commercial success. The success of Microsoft began with the MS-DOS computer operating system that Gates licensed to IBM. Gates also set about protecting the royalties that he could acquire from computer software by aggressively fighting against all forms of software piracy, effectively creating the retail software market that now exists today. This move was quite controversial at the time as it was the freedom of sharing that produced much innovation and advances in the newly forming software industry. But it was this stand against software piracy, that was to be central in the great commercial success that Microsoft went on to achieve.

Bill Gates retired as Microsoft CEO in 2008.

My OPINION ......
I think Bill Gates is creative person because he apply his creativity on his achievement which is Microsoft, software company. Guided by a belief that the computer would be a valuable tool on every office desktop and in every home, they began developing software for personal computers. He is the first person that create the software and convert it into a valueable product to sell on the market. Gates' foresight and his creativity for personal computing have been central to the success of Microsoft and the software industry. He change the Mircosoft sofware become a novelty products as well.  Microsoft had released Microsoft Windows, a graphical extension in 1985. Windows 1.0 programs can call MS-DOS functions, and GUI programs are run from .exe files just like MS-DOS programs. However, Windows .exe files had their own "new executable" (NE) file format, which only Windows could process and which, for example, allowed demand-loading of code and data.Besides, the first version of Windows provided a new software environment for developing and running applications that use bitmap displays and mouse pointing devices. Before Windows, PC users relied on the MS-DOS® method of typing commands at the C prompt (C:\). With Windows, users moved a mouse to point and click their way through tasks, such as starting applications. In addition, Windows users could switch among several concurrently running applications. The product included a set of desktop applications, including the MS-DOS file management program, a calendar, card file, notepad, calculator, clock, and telecommunications programs, which helped users manage day-to-day activities.

Other than that, Bill Gates also is a innovative person. He use the idea of software and create his own Microsoft.Under Gates' leadership, Microsoft's products has been to continually advance and improve software technology, and to make it easier, more cost-effective and more enjoyable for people to use computers. Last but no least is the invention. Well, the first software invention happened when he was 13 or 12 years old, when he began programming on his school computer with ForTran (FORmula TRANslation) and LISP (LISt Programming). The major invention was Windows 1.0, the first software that was commercially used by Microsoft. Then they made Windows 3.0 and 3.1 then 95 and 98. Then it was NT and 2003 XP and Server and then Vista. The next O/S will be Windows Vienna. Microsoft began introducing its most prominent office products. Microsoft Works, an integrated office program which combined features typically found in a word processor, spreadsheet, database and other office applications. In 1999, Gates wrote Business @ the Speed of Thought, a book that shows how computer technology can solve business problems in fundamentally new ways. The book was published in 25 languages and is available in more than 60 countries. Business @ the Speed of Thought has received wide critical acclaim, and was listed on the best-seller lists of the New York Times, USA. These all shows that the talent of invention of Bill Gates in his career.

Welcome to my CREATIVE STUDIES blog

Hi, my name is Gary Lim Teck Yi - same as the name on my IC .......also same as the name on my ------birth certificate  .For easy to remember my name just call me GARY.This blog is special made for my creative studies and as the owner for this blog, I will post all my knowledge that I had learn from creative studies at here.

Yesterday is my first time attended the of creative studies class.I felt very happy can join the class.During the class, I had learned how to think "CRAZY". Mr Radzi, our lecturer teached us how to think by the creative way and also explain little about human brain. From there, we can know whether we are creative thinker or logical thinker. This is a very special way to differenciate which thinker you are by using our thumbnail. For me, I felt I had learned many new things in the class. For example, when we are sleeping our left part brain also rest but the right part brain still function, so sometimes we will start to dreaming.

That's the introduction for me today.I know being creative is hard but i will try my best because I believe that

Creativity is an attitude, combine with effort; 1% inspiration and 99% perspirationTHOMAS EDISON

What is CREATIVITY ?

  • An Ability
A simple definition is that creativity is the ability to imagine or invent something new. As we will see below, creativity is not the ability to create out of nothing (only God can do that), but the ability to generate new ideas by combining, changing, or reapplying existing ideas. Some creative ideas are astonishing and brilliant, while others are just simple, good, practical ideas that no one seems to have thought of yet.
Believe it or not, everyone has substantial creative ability. Just look at how creative children are. In adults, creativity has too often been suppressed through education, but it is still there and can be reawakened. Often all that's needed to be creative is to make a commitment to creativity and to take the time for it.

  • An Attitude
Creativity is also an attitude: the ability to accept change and newness, a willingness to play with ideas and possibilities, a flexibility of outlook, the habit of enjoying the good, while looking for ways to improve it. We are socialized into accepting only a small number of permitted or normal things, like chocolate-covered strawberries, for example. The creative person realizes that there are other possibilities, like peanut butter and banana sandwiches, or chocolate-covered prunes.

  • A Process
Creative people work hard and continually to improve ideas and solutions, by making gradual alterations and refinements to their works. Contrary to the mythology surrounding creativity, very, very few works of creative excellence are produced with a single stroke of brilliance or in a frenzy of rapid activity. Much closer to the real truth are the stories of companies who had to take the invention away from the inventor in order to market it because the inventor would have kept on tweaking it and fiddling with it, always trying to make it a little better.

The creative person knows that there is always room for improvement.
